Newsletter Mrs. Robb’s First Grade September 13, 2013 Dear Parents, Our first grade field trip to Cedar Breaks is on Thursday, September 19th. We will leave the school at 9:00 AM and return before 2:00 P.M. We will be going to the Cedar Breaks Visitors Center. We will also go to the Alpine Pond for a short hike. On our way back down the mountain we will stop and eat our lunches. Please send a coat and walking shoes with your child that day. Cedar Mountain can be cold this time of year. Please plan on having your child eat school lunch this day. I have attached a permission slip to this newsletter if your child has not returned theirs yet. Thanks so much! On Monday, Sept. 16th we will start our Take-Home Library Books and sight words. We will wait on our Spelling Homework until the alphabet review is complete. As part of the Take-Home Library your child will bring home a baggie, inside the baggie there will be a list of books on a slip of colored cardstock along with the book your child is to read. Please initial next to the book title that your child has read and then as they return the book another one will be sent home. I also have sent the 1st Quarter Homework Log in the same baggie. Please read with your child at least 20 min. each day and then fill the date in, sign, and write how many minutes they read. Please know that reading to your child also counts as part of the 20 min. Plus, the handwriting time counts too. As each student is responsible for returning their Homework Log they will earn one penny a day and an extra nickel on Fridays if they have read all week. Then at the end of each quarter we will have our classroom store where they can purchase items. Our homework time also includes sight words. I have been keeping track of their handwriting homework, so most of the children have already earned a quarter. The sight word lists are for your child to keep at home and memorize unless I gave you several that had stars next to the words. Those need to stay in their baggie until they are passed off. Then as he/she passes their list off I will send a new list home. There are 11 lists. You are welcome to cut up the sight words and use them in fun ways to help your child learn these words fluently. We will start parent volunteers on Monday, September 23rd at 8:40 - 9:20 the first week and then 8:50 – 9:20 the following weeks. I just need a few extra minutes to explain how it works that first week. Each child has a poetry notebook with poems we have been learning and they will get to read a few poems each day until we have books in their book basket next week. I have attached a list of those parents who have volunteered. Thank you so much for your willingness to help. Newsletter Mrs. Robb’s First Grade September 6, 2013 Dear Parents, It has been a busy few days. In math we made a kite using our favorite primary or secondary color and graphed it, and we completed M&M Math where the students sorted their M&M’s by color, graphed them, counted them, and made a pattern out of them. Today, I read the book “Chrysanthemum” to the children. This book is about a little mouse that loves her name until she goes to school. Then she’s not quite sure her name is as terrific as she originally thought. As part of our math we made a graph of “How many letters are in our names?” I have also compiled a book with each child’s picture in it called “Our Hello Book!” This is to help the children learn each other’s names. Our first grade field trip to Cedar Breaks is on Thursday, September 19th. We will leave the school at 9:00 AM and return before 2:00 P.M. We will be going to the Cedar Breaks Visitors Center where a Park Ranger will talk to the children. We will also go to the Alpine Pond for a short hike. On our way back down the mountain we will stop and eat our lunches. Please send a coat and walking shoes with your child that day. Cedar Mountain can be cold this time of year. Please plan on having your child eat school lunch this day. I have attached a permission slip to this newsletter. Thanks so much! We will start the take-home library books and our sight words on Monday, September 16th. We will wait on our spelling homework until after our Alphabet review is completed. I would like to start the parent volunteers on Monday, September 23rd. Each child has a poetry notebook with poems we have been learning. I am just going to have them read three poems until we start Guided Reading Groups then they will be able to read out of their book baskets. I have attached a list of those parents who have volunteered. Thank you so much for your willingness to help. Newsletter August 29, 2013

Newsletter Mrs. Robb’s First Grade August 29, 2013 Dear Parents, We have had another great week! We are getting very good with procedures and listening. I have really enjoyed getting to know each of your children. We have learned a lot about each other during our interviews for the “Leader of the Day.” Thank you for the yummy healthy snacks, we sure have appreciated them. In math we have been learning to represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. We have used snap counters and our yellow and red colored dots to help represent these problems. In our Art class with Mrs. Peterson we have started a neighborhood collage patterned after the artist Romare Bearden. These lessons go along with our social studies to recognize and demonstrate respect for the differences within one’s community. We also made some beautiful tissue paper fish in art. They are hanging in our classroom. If you come in please take a minute to look at them. I have attached a couple of book orders from Scholastic. I usually send the Honeybee and Firefly home, too, but they didn’t send me those. You can look on line and order that way. My code is L8QPQ. Have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend! Sincerely, Mrs. Robb The newsletters will also be posted on my blog sight.
